Government Street Beautification

Government St / Jefferson Hwy Pilot Project
Saturday, June 20th | 8:00 AM - noon

  • Clean Pelican is seeking volunteers for the following:

    • We need our garden-loving neighbors to bring their enthusiasm! Consider Volunteering for Saturday, June 20th, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

    • For those residents who cannot volunteer but are interested in this project, we ask that you become familiar with the project and function as ambassadors to our neighborhoods to promote this project and others like it.

This is a "Demonstration Project" which is a very small area, but power packed with planting. Our volunteers will be asked to plant hundreds of plants in this area. As the plan states, this will replace the present plantings, however, will utilize the present irrigation system with improvements.

  • A coalition of organizations led by Clean Pelican was formed to demonstrate improvement to the medians on Government Street.

This demonstration project will be partially funded by the City of Baton Rouge with focus at the corner of Jefferson Highway and Government Street. The project funding was pledged by the Metro Council District Members Laurie Adams, Twahna Harris and Carolyn Coleman.

The state funded highway project transition to the road diet of Government Street and specifically the landscaping of the medians along the length of Government leaves much to be desired as those plantings have not met the challenges of the city's environment.

As the City of Baton Rouge has jurisdiction of Government Street and has contracted with Groundworks Landscaping, their input was vital with the joint effort by Clean Pelican and Baton Rouge Green and Carbo Landscape Architects. Due to the location of the demonstration project, the Goodwood Property Owners Association has been asked to lead the effort in gathering comments on the plan and volunteers to do the planting of the various native plants that will be installed on June 20th, 2026.
